Ville-Matti Koskiniemi is a sound designer and musician based in Helsinki, Finland.
In his sound design work, Koskiniemi mostly focuses on experimental documentaries and short films. The films he has worked on have been screened on film festivals around the globe. They have also achieved wide recognition and awards along the way (for more info, see Portfolio). He has also worked on radio features. For documentaries Koskiniemi is equipped to work on field as a location sound engineer with years of experience from YLE (the Finnish Broadcasting company).
Koskiniemi is the founding member of experimental rock group Musta Huone. Their latest album, Valosaasteen sekaan, has received international acclaim, and was selected as album of the week, as well as sixth best album of 2023, by the British independent music media The Quietus. In Musta Huone Koskiniemi is the guitarist and vocalist, and also in charge of lyrics, tape loops and production.
His music can also be heard in the films and radio features he’s worked on. Koskiniemi has a unique way of composing with tape loops; his sound is fragmented and rich with hints of acoustic instruments and electronic music buried under distortion and noise. Hisshet is his solo project under which he has published some of these compositions.
In his studio Koskiniemi works as a mixing engineer in the underground music scene of Finland. He has worked with artists and bands such as Pietu Arvola (Bereen Ondo), Stoned To Death, Pillow and Otto Mikkola & Pitkä ikävä. His studio is based in Helsinki at Vallila district (more info about the studio here).
Koskiniemi is also part of Paa jotaki and Konto-klubi. Paa jotaki is a small Helsinki based record label focusing on marginal music. Konto-klubi is an experimental music festival held in Rovaniemi.
